SELF — Lili Reinhart Is Fighting for Her Health—and Yours
The actor has been navigating a medical mystery privately for years. She’s finally ready to talk about it.
If you’re one of Lili Reinhart’s more than 34 million social media followers, you’re probably familiar with the actor’s warm, but firm, social presence. She’s like your witty, charismatic big sister who’s as confident commanding an audience at the White House as she is taking down bullies in her comments section or speaking directly to her followers about mental health. Reinhart knows her audience—and isn’t afraid to advocate for them, or herself.
When I meet her at the Cara Restaurant in Los Angeles in early November 2024, Reinhart exudes a warmth I immediately recognize from her TikTok—she goes in for a hug the second I stand to greet her. Reinhart tells me she didn’t wear much makeup today because she knew she would end up in tears. “I was going to say to you the moment I walked in, ‘I hope you’re okay with crying,’” she says. “In my private life, when I cry, I really cry. That’s not something that’s very socially acceptable, as we know as women. We don’t fucking cry in public because it’s uncomfortable. But I knew I was going to cry today, and I didn’t feel nervous about it.”
We’re meeting in the afternoon on Thursday, November 7—the day after the 2024 presidential election was called for Donald J. Trump. Reinhart hasn’t been shy about letting her followers know exactly where she stands politically; on election eve, as Trump, someone who’s been found liable for sexual abuse, won state after state, Reinhart showed support for SA survivors. “I think these young men clearly have the wrong role model, and abusers are being rewarded,” she tells me. (Reinhart has previously talked about her own abuse from a male colleague in her teen years, though she’s avoided naming him.)
For Reinhart—and millions of other grieving Americans, including this author—defining the first week of November 2024 as triggering is an understatement. But the fact that we’re meeting on this particular day is just a cruel coincidence: Reinhart has been privately dealing with a debilitating, hard-to-pin-down health issue over the past four years. She says her doctors suspect that she has an autoimmune disease (though they’re not sure which one exactly) that’s causing several painful symptoms, or she may be dealing with the aftereffects of a previous infection.
Reinhart has been facing this frustrating situation privately, but decided to share it publicly now for a very personal reason: At the time of this interview, her grandmother had recently been diagnosed with stage IV ovarian cancer. Reinhart says her grandmother received a diagnosis after months of uncertainty and advocacy on her own behalf. She says her grandmother’s doctors initially attributed her symptoms to old age. Fighting for care has been something Reinhart has found herself consumed with in recent years too. Continue Reading

Lili Reinhart and her friend Isabela Merced got interviewed for The Cut. The article also came with a photoshoot by Vince Aung. See the photos and read the article below.

Two childhood friends reunite to reminisce about their theater-camp days and post-rehearsal mozzarella sticks at Applebee’s. It sounds like the plot of an indie comedy, except it’s real life and both women are actually famous actresses. Before Hollywood — a starring role on Riverdale for Lili Reinhart and one in Dora and the Lost City of Gold for Isabela Merced — they were two aspiring actresses in Cleveland, Ohio.
Merced, 22, was around 8 or 9 years old, and Reinhart, 27, was entering her teen years when they met at a community theater program. “You always seemed like my older sister in a way that was really cool,” Merced says to Reinhart. While they haven’t been in a film or television series together yet (though they look forward to the day it happens), they remember being in Annie together. (Merced played Annie and Reinhart played Lily St. Regis.)
“I found footage of that recently that my mom took,” Merced says to Reinhart. “You were such a star. I was watching it like, No way she was serving this much in community theater, that’s crazy.” Merced was a star herself, Reinhart says. “Our community theater center did a lot of shows and we always knew Isabela was going to get every role that she wanted.”
The actresses reconnected in adulthood at a Gen-A photo shoot with Armani Beauty last January. Gen A is a group of the next generation of young talent curated by Armani including Camila Mendes, Chase Stokes, Michael Evans Behling, and Chris Briney. Through Gen A, they come together in a series of photo shoots and at film festivals to discuss beauty, mental health, and their careers. Reinhart, who admittedly “doesn’t do well in brand-new environments,” remembers feeling comforted when she saw Merced on set.
“To be a part of something with people in my industry who I look up to and admire and who are doing good work, to be grouped in with those kinds of people, is very validating,” Reinhart says. “I think it’s cool to think about how the kids who will go to the same community theater as us can see us doing this together and be like, Wow, they took the same stepping stones as us,” says Merced.
Here, the friends discuss their upcoming projects, finding makeup favorites, their mental health, and more.

The Italian version of Vanity Fair posted a new photoshoot + interview of Lili Reinhart. Three photos are now available in the gallery and a translation of the article can be read here, right below the gallery links. Note that I don’t speak italian (like, at all) and used Google Translate to (roughly) translate the interview and them did some modifications on it so it’s clearer. If you fluently speak italian and see some mistakes, feel free to report them!

Vanity Fair | Lili Reinhart: “Enough with the toxic culture of diets”
The dialogue with your body and mental health must be managed: Lili Reinhart is a model for the Gen Z who follows her in Riverdale. And with the conquest of the Women in Film Max Mara Face of the Future Award her begins her turning point as an actress.
Lili Reinhart crouches on the leather sofa, tilts her head to the side and tells me she can’t keep her mouth shut. “I don’t want to expose myself all the time either, but someone has to do it, right?” She asks. The last time she could not shut up was last May, when she took it out – without ever mentioning it – with Kim Kardashian and the “toxic culture of diets” : the occasion was Kim’s notable and lightning-fast weight loss, willing at all costs to get into a famous Marilyn Monroe dress to show off at the Met Gala. Her accusation: bragging about having lost all those pounds in a short time is harmful. Ahead of her twenty-six years, her last years were spent playing Betty Cooper, the good girl next door protagonist of Riverdale, the Gen Z TV series par excellence, but also to raise awareness on mental health and body positivity. With rare sincerity, she spoke of suffering from anxiety and depression, and of the difficulties in accepting her body.
Lili was in Milan to attend the Max Mara spring-summer fashion show, which on October 27 will present her with the Women in Film Max Mara Face of the Future Award of 2022, the prize awarded every year to an actress who is at a turning point in her career. The watershed for her will be the farewell to Riverdale, of which filming is underway for the final season. Lili Reinhart is Betty Cooper: a character as much loved by the very young as it is difficult to forget.
What effect does winning the Women in Film Max Mara Face of the Future award have?
“When I found out, I felt flattered and honored to be considered an influential person. At that moment I thought I won it for my work on mental health and body acceptance. Then a friend pointed out to me the obvious: I receive it as an actress. It was interesting, a confirmation of what I do. I still can’t take myself completely seriously.”Because?
“Maybe because I would like to keep my feet on the ground, or because I haven’t received many awards yet or maybe it’s just the impostor syndrome. I certainly feel that I have not yet shown my best as an actress.”What would you like to do?
“I started a production company with which I am developing very ambitious projects that also include fantastic roles for me. When I start playing more demanding characters, I will feel more confident.” Continue Reading
